Rack safety encompasses all structural, technical and organizational measures that ensure the stability of racking systems. They prevent parts from tipping over, slipping or falling and protect people, materials and the system itself. Important specifications in Germany are DGUV Directive 208-061 and DIN EN 15635.
The main core components here are
- Bolt anchors for floor anchoring
They ensure that rack uprights are reliably anchored and remain stable even under heavy loads, during loading and unloading or in the event of slight impacts. Professional floor anchoring is particularly important for heavy-duty shelving in order to increase stability and operational safety.
- Collision protection, impact protection, planks, bollards to secure the rack uprights
Especially in heavily frequented storage areas, unintentional collisions can quickly lead to damage to load-bearing rack components. The use of suitable protective devices significantly reduces the risk of deformation, loss of stability and consequential damage. At the same time, these elements contribute to greater safety for employees, goods and operating equipment.
- Load distributors for even load distribution
They are used in particular where shelf supports or other heavy structures place heavy loads on the floor. The larger contact surface reduces the load and minimizes the risk of floor damage or subsidence. Load distributors are therefore a useful addition for sensitive floors, high shelf loads or special requirements regarding the load-bearing capacity of the substrate.
- Push-through protection for goods and personnel protection
Push-through protection prevents goods from being inadvertently pushed through to the rear during storage or removal. This increases both the safety of the goods and the protection of people behind the shelving or in adjacent work areas.
- Mesh back panels to protect goods and people
They prevent stored goods from falling out of the shelving and endangering people or objects. At the same time, the lattice structure maintains a good view of the stored items.
- End frame raisers for lateral fall protection
End frame raisers / end upright raisers provide lateral fall protection at the ends of racking systems. They may be necessary if there is a risk of load units or stored goods falling down on sides not intended for loading and unloading - for example, on adjacent traffic routes, work areas or walkways.
Further measures Regular safety inspections, load capacity labeling and spacers between racks round off the concept. Planning is based on the type of shelving, load, location and seismic requirements.
