Spacer

A spacer for shelving is a connecting element in storage technology that is used for parallel positioning of rows of shelving and for fastening to the wall. These components are indispensable when setting up double shelving and contribute significantly to the stability and safety of the entire shelving structure.

Function of spacers for shelving

The spacer is used to stabilize shelving systems. In pallet racking or frame constructions, it ensures a secure connection between two parallel uprights. The fixed installation between the uprights stiffens the structure and prevents it from tipping sideways. The spacer for shelving also prevents the uprights from twisting or shifting under load.

In combination with suitable fasteners, stable and secure shelving assemblies can be created. The spacer is placed between the uprights to ensure a controlled, fixed distance and increase the overall stability of the storage system.

Difference to pallet spacers and pallet spacers

It is important to distinguish them from pallet spacers or pallet spacers. While a spacer connects the rack uprights to each other or to the wall, pallet spacers and pallet spacers are placed between individual pallets. These elements are used to create a defined distance when stacking pallets so that the goods on the lower pallets are not damaged and air can circulate.

These two product groups therefore fulfill completely different functions: The spacer stabilizes the racking structure itself, while the pallet spacers protect the stacked goods. A combination of both systems is not common in practice.

Choice of material and professional design

Spacers are usually made of steel. Their length and cross-section must be selected to suit the load, the available installation space and the overall structure. For greater heights or spans, a professional static calculation is recommended in order to avoid deformations or incorrect loads.

For maximum safety in the warehouse, TOPREGAL recommends the PR15000 or PR4500/PR9000 spacers for pallet racking and wide-span racking uprights. Two spacers are recommended up to a height of 300 cm and three spacers from a height of 300 cm.

Assembly and use

The spacers are fitted by screwing them to the uprights of the shelving. For double shelving systems, the spacers are fitted between the two uprights at the back, connecting both rows of shelving to form a stable unit. This saves space and at the same time increases the stability of the entire system.
