Shelving with load capacity labeling

Modern shelving requires a load capacity marking. This indicates the maximum load that the shelving or shelving system in question can and may safely bear. It is therefore an essential component of operational safety.

Whether pallet racking, shelving or wide span racking, the specific load capacity of the racking must be indicated by a corresponding label. The load capacity of the shelving is determined by the design, material and construction. It describes how much weight is permitted per shelf or per rack frame and is clearly visible to users through this rack labeling. As a rule, the load capacity is stated in kilograms and is clearly marked directly on the shelving.

Why determine and label the load capacity of shelving?

Clear labeling helps to prevent overloading and thus protects people, materials and goods. If the specified load capacity is exceeded, this can lead to deformation or even collapse of the shelving structure. This poses a considerable risk to employees and can cause expensive consequential damage. For safety reasons, the shelf load capacity must therefore be determined precisely.

In addition, the shelf labeling on which the load capacity is based is also relevant from a legal perspective. The German Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health and the DGUV regulations stipulate that racking systems must be inspected regularly and that the permissible load capacity of the racking must be permanently and clearly indicated. This is the only way to ensure that shelving is used in accordance with the technical specifications.

At TOPREGAL, each shelving system and each individual shelving unit is supplied with an individual load capacity label. The specified values are based on static calculations and comprehensive quality tests. This means that users know exactly what loads their shelving can safely bear. Shelving with the correct load capacity marking is more durable, more efficient and safer.
