An add-on bay is an additional storage section of a storage rack that is connected to an existing base bay in order to expand the capacity of the rack. While a pallet rack, for example, starts with an independent base bay, it is systematically enlarged with add-on bays. The add-on bay uses one of the existing uprights of the neighboring rack section and only requires one additional upright and corresponding cross beams to complete it.
How the add-on bay design works
The pallet racking basically consists of a base bay as the starting unit and can be extended by any number of add-on bays. In contrast to the base bay, which is an independent segment of a pallet rack, an add-on bay is structurally connected to the existing pallet rack. The add-on bay shares a row of uprights with the neighboring base bay or another add-on bay of the racking, which saves material and costs. All modular shelving systems and types of shelving can generally be extended using preconfigured add-on bays or by selecting the individual shelving components that match the shelving. This modular design makes it possible to expand a storage shelving system step by step and adapt it flexibly to changing storage requirements.
Add-on bays at TOPREGAL
TOPREGAL offers pallet racking that can be easily extended using add-on bays - assembled from individual racking components. All safety standards and load capacities of the entire pallet racking system are retained. A typical pallet racking system can thus consist of a base bay and several add-on bays, making this racking into long rows of racking that are optimally adapted to the available hall space. In its online business, TOPREGAL GmbH largely dispenses with the sale of basic shelving for expansion via add-on shelving. It offers pre-configured rows of shelving up to a length of 50 meters in various heights and with different supports to make purchasing shelving particularly easy. This means that customers receive a basic shelving unit and any number of add-on shelving units without having to go through the sometimes complex purchasing process.
Advantages of using add-on bays
The use of add-on bays to extend existing pallet racking offers several advantages: Firstly, the investment costs per storage space are reduced, as the pallet racking is extended using add-on bays with just one upright profile. Secondly, the modular design allows the pallet racking to be extended as required. Thirdly, an add-on bay optimizes the use of space, as the extended pallet racking becomes more compact and distances between the individual units are minimized.
When planning and equipping larger warehouses, the concept with add-on bays means that large pallet racks can be created in the long term, even with a limited initial budget. Each add-on bay expands the existing storage or pallet racking with additional storage locations without compromising the structural integrity of the entire racking.
