Block storage

In logistics, bulk storage is defined as goods storage without shelves. Block stacking of crates, cartons or wire mesh pallets, for example, is carried out in blocks one behind the other and one on top of the other. The advantages of block storage are a flexible arrangement of the goods to be stored, low costs and a small footprint.

A disadvantage of block storage is the poor access to individual articles, especially the difficult removal of goods stored in the back rows. As a result, often only the LIFO principle (last in, first out) is possible. This means that goods that were last placed into storage are the first to be removed and thus brought forward. This can be problematic for food and other perishable goods with an expiration date.
